This winter, make sure you are getting the right care at the right time. With more healthcare options available than ever, it is important to know where to go for medical support.

  • Your local pharmacy can help with minor illnesses like coughs, colds, and sore throats. No appointment needed! They may also be able to offer treatment and some prescription medicine for some conditions, without you needing to see a GP (this is called Pharmacy First).

  • NHS 111 and 111 online are available 24/7 to provide urgent medical advice. They can direct you to the most appropriate service and even book appointments if necessary.

  • The NHS app makes it easier to manage your healthcare from home. Book GP appointments, order repeat prescriptions, and access your medical records quickly and conveniently.

  • GP surgeries now offer a wider range of healthcare professionals, such as nurses, clinical pharmacists, and physiotherapists. Different professionals working in a general practice bring extra skills and experience that registered patients can benefit from, meaning faster access to the right care in the community.

  • Know the difference between urgent and emergency care: Use urgent care for conditions like infections, minor fractures, or sprains. Only visit A&E for life-threatening issues like severe chest pain or major injuries.
